Olympic Sparks Group for Introduction to Basic Swimming Skills
Welcome to the Olympic Sparks Group of the Thunder Bay Thunderbolts Swim Team! This program is designed for swimmers who are just beginning their swimming journey and are eager to learn the basic skills of the sport. The Olympic Sparks group focuses on introducing swimmers to the water, building confidence, and developing foundational swimming skills in a fun and supportive environment.
1. Training Focus
- Fundamental Skills and Water Safety: Teach the fundamental skills of swimming and water safety.
- Body Control and Coordination: Develop body control, balance, and coordination in the water, introducing basic techniques of freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly.
- Building Confidence: Help swimmers feel comfortable and confident in the water while building a solid foundation for future swimming development.
2. Skill Development
- Emphasis on Technique: Place a strong emphasis on skill development and proper technique.
- Guided Drills: Experienced coaches guide swimmers through various exercises and drills to improve body positioning, breath control, and stroke efficiency.
- Introduction to Racing Skills: Introduce racing skills such as starts and turns, as well as the importance of fair play and good sportsmanship.
3. Competition and Events
- Introductory Events: While formal competitions are not mandatory, swimmers will have the opportunity to participate in introductory club-based competitive events.
- Focus on Learning: Events focus on introducing swimmers to the rules, ethics, and fair play associated with swimming competitions.
- Supportive Environment: Swimmers gain exposure to the racing environment without the pressure of a formal meet, fostering a positive and supportive introduction to competitive swimming.
4. Age and Training Frequency
- Open to All Ages: Suitable for swimmers of all ages who are new to swimming or have minimal experience.
- Regular Training: Typically train two to three times a week, allowing swimmers to gradually develop their skills and confidence in the water.
5. Season Duration and Training Periods
- Flexible Training Periods: Two training periods throughout the season:
- Period 1: September 30th to February 5th
- Period 2: February 22nd to June 25th
- Flexible Participation: Swimmers can join for one or more training periods, depending on availability and interest.
- Structured Learning: Each period provides a focused and structured learning environment, allowing swimmers to progress at their own pace.

7. Program Fees 2025-2026
- Swimming Canada Fee $17.00
- Swim Ontario Fee $38.50
- HST $5.00
- Swimming Canada Processing Fee $2.00
- Program fees:
- 1 practice per week = $345.00 (per session)
- 2 practices per week = $660.00 (per session)
