December Message from Coach Stu: Being Proactive

Three months of tough training down and we have had a number of great results in the pool already. I have seen a noticeable improvement in your fitness levels and toughness as we prepare for some upcoming competitions. I have talked to each of you about being proactive in taking care of yourselves through these long stretches of training. Taking care of the small things throughout these stretches can help you not get overwhelmed physically or mentally.

STRETCHING: I know it seems like we harp on the stretching everyday but we wouldn't do it if it was being looked after in a way that was going to help you and your body recover from workouts. You have all gotten better at paying attention to it but make it a lifestyle choice not a chore.

HYDRATING: Nothing helps the recovery process and your ability to perform better than having a high level of Hydration. It is great to be finally re-filling water bottles during workout and seeing all of you refill them after a workout. Keep that water handy and flowing.

ICING: It's not just for injuries anymore!!! Icing can also help the recovery process. It takes away the inflammation that is built up during a workout. It is a way for you to take care of your body before injuries occur.

STRESS MANAGEMENT: We spend a lot of time in the pool under stress in the pool which can take a toll mentally and physically. With that in mind, find a way to structure and live your life away from the pool in a way that does not enhance that stress level. The key is managing it and not getting overwhelmed.

These are only a few of the things that should be part of your training lifestyle. It is time to get really serious and be proactive about your training and your performance.
